A message in the bottle for you. Happy Easter!

Dear friends of The Merchant of Venice,

we write to you from a Venice we would never have imagined: deserted, suspended in an almost metaphysical dimension that inspires fear and bewilderment but at the same time enhances all its disarming beauty. A Venice that now appears as never before a bulwark in history and time and its fragility and splendor seem to be the metaphor for the condition of contemporary man and what we are all experiencing.

Since the last days of February, Italy has been hit suddenly and unexpectedly by an epidemic wave that has had a dramatic outcome on the population, especially the most fragile and elderly. For each of us, scenarios until now unimaginable have opened up, crucial decisions to be taken quickly, new lifestyles, new rules of common living. The existence of just a few months ago seems almost a distant memory but to which, we are confident, we will be able to return soon with everyone's commitment.

In particular, our thoughts and gratitude go to the doctors of the Civil Hospital of Venice, at the forefront in the fight against Coronavirus.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, with still unclear and fragmented news, the first thought of us at The Merchant of Venice has been to secure our staff and our customers. With a difficult choice but sure to act in the right direction, we temporarily closed our boutiques and took all the necessary measures to protect the headquarters staff.

In addition, to stay close to customers, admirers and collaborators we have enhanced our services on the web, both as regards the online shop, which is always operational, but above all as regards our social channels where we have launched a large entertainment program that offers daily cultural content on Venice, perfume, craftsmanship, including live broadcasts during which it is possible to interact with questions and comments. You can follow us on our Instagram account @themerchantofvenice and Facebook page.

In addition, in these secluded days we are dedicating ourselves to the study and creation of new fragrances and new lines that will be presented from next autumn.

As we write, the latest data regarding contagion numbers and news from the countries that were affected before ours are starting to be timidly comforting and we can imagine that our boutiques will reopen in a little over a month.

Meanwhile, in this deserted Venice, without mass tourism, traffic, swell, nature takes center stage with its smells and scents. Unexpected glimpses open, forgotten sounds and scents, the same, we want to think, that perceived the first settlers who founded Venice 1599 years ago.

And then one thinks that this is perhaps the Venice of the year zero, a Venice that wants to write a new page of history and we at The Merchant of Venice want to take part with enthusiasm.

I thank Marco Sitran for the beautiful photos he shared with us.

We wish you all and your loved ones a happy Easter and invite you to follow us and write to us often. See you later!
